MILITARY ROBOTS

Combat robots (or military robots) are used to save human lives for military purposes, such as reconnaissance, combat operations, and demining, or to work in conditions of increased human complexity.

Military robots are not only automatic weapons that partially or completely replace humans and are capable of performing anthropomorphic actions, but also those that operate in air and water environments (remote-controlled unmanned aerial vehicles, underwater vehicles and surface ships). The device can be electromechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or combined.

One of the main paradigms of Western civilization today is the recognition of human life as the highest value. But such humanistic ideas come into conflict with the need to conduct military operations and train military personnel for them. The death of their own soldiers not only does not correspond to abstract values, but is also very poorly perceived by voters, to whose opinion modern politicians are sensitive to.
Modern Western armies are doing everything possible to reduce the number of losses. Soldiers are provided with the most modern equipment, communications equipment, and bulletproof vests. The United States and its allies conduct ground operations only in extreme cases, trying to limit themselves to missile or air bomb attacks. However, it is often impossible to win a war without a ground operation.
However, in general, we can say that the use of automated systems on the battlefield is one of the most promising areas of military development. We are not yet very good at making mechanical assistants, but many experts believe that in the next decade humanity is waiting for a breakthrough in this area. Unfortunately, most likely, new technologies will be among the first to be used for war and destruction.
The military robot consists of a device controlled remotely and a remote control from which control takes place. Robotic mechanisms differ in the degree of autonomy, they can follow the nested program to a greater or lesser extent and do without constant human intervention. Already today, there are dozens of types of purely military robots that differ in their size, body shape, chassis, and the presence of various manipulators.

When you mention military robots, the first thing that comes to mind is anthropomorphic Terminator robots from science fiction films. They have their own intelligence and can act autonomously. However, so far this picture does not correspond to reality. Such automated systems already exist (although we are not talking about artificial intelligence yet), but their cost is huge. Therefore, military robots these days are automated or remote-controlled platforms.

RIPSAW M5 ROBOTIC VEHICLE

The Ripsaw M5 is a Robotic Combat Vehicle (rcv) developed by the Ripsaw team, which includes Textron Systems, Howe & Howe, and FLIR Systems.

The RCV builds on Howe & Howe’s expertise in building specialized ground vehicles such as the EV3-F1, EV3-F2, and EV3-F4. The vehicle also uses FLIR’s innovations and expertise in driverless vehicle technology, as well as Textron’s expertise in defense and technical failures.

The Ripsaw team presented M 2019rcv at the annual general meeting and exhibition of the American army Association( AUSA), held on May 10, 2019, 5.

Design and characteristics of a light tank
Based on the design and professionalism of the EV3-F4, the unmanned ground vehicle has been modified for combat use. The Ripsaw EV3-F4 is one of the fastest two-wheeled vehicles in the world, serving customers in the luxury segment.

The M5 tank exoskeleton is a tightly welded tubular structure based on a patented high-performance suspension. The Ripsaw M5 has a maximum gross weight of 3,855.54 kg and can carry a payload weighing up to 2,721. 5 kg.

The M5’s high modularity means that it is suitable for multiple applications. Its open and flat architecture allows you to integrate different payloads for multiple combat applications. The vehicle has built-in turrets for carrying FLIR electronics and weapons systems. It is also equipped with a high-intensity lighting system.

Mission maneuverability of the Ripsaw M5 Robot Combat Vehicle
“The Ripsaw EV3-F4 is one of the fastest two-wheeled vehicles in the world, serving customers in the luxury segment.”
FLIR360° recognition technology provides flexibility for unmanned vehicles when performing mission-critical tasks. The system’s sensor algorithms can work both under normal conditions and in difficult conditions with fog, sun glare, and poor visibility.

The tank can operate silently without making any noise. It also has a mine clearance line (MICLIC) and a mine clearance Tiller. The roller for destroying improvised explosive devices (IEDs), installed on the tank, is equipped with a flexible counteraction mechanism to neutralize the detected threat. The M5RCV can also carry the FLIR Skyraider unmanned aerial system.
The tank can be equipped with medium-caliber weapons and missiles. The UGV Protector – 30 medium-caliber turret (MCT-30) is armed with a 30 mm/40 mm Bushmaster cannon and a 7.62 mm twin Cannon. Automatic guns are equipped with a simple ammunition control system.

The M5RCV can also be equipped with other combat stations, such as the regular Javelin remote combat station (CROWS-J). The turret is equipped with a javelin (M2) anti-tank guided missile.50 machine guns, 7.62 mm M240 machine guns or 40 mm MK-19 automatic grenade launcher (AGL).

The CROWS system also supports 360° rotation of the RCV, but the maximum angle of elevation of the gun is from -20° to 60°. It combines a daytime video camera, a thermal imaging camera, and a laser rangefinder.

The FLIR gimbal further enhances the M5’s maneuverability and control and helps capture multi-axis movements with a high-definition zoom lens.

Ripsaw M5 engine and maneuverability
The Ripsaw M5 is powered by a 1,500 hp petrol engine or a 1,000 hp diesel engine. the engine is connected to an automatic transmission system supplied by Allison.

The tank is designed to work on any type of terrain, including deserts, snow, hills or uneven surfaces. The suspension is supported by a rubber D-shaped tanker truck, two Sprocket wheels, three swivel casters and five cargo wheels.

Two wheels with sprockets support the movement of the track tread. The weight of the tank is evenly distributed to support multiple payload trolleys.

TYPES OF MILITARY ROBOTS

The development of military robots significantly accelerated with the beginning of the Cold War. That’s when the first intellectual works with “eyes”, “ears” and other sensors appeared. And even after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, military robotics continues to be one of the priority areas of science and technology. Like the branches of the army, modern combat robots are divided into 3 groups: ground, flying and floating.

AERIAL MILITARY OPERATIONS

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, also sometimes abbreviated; colloquially, the name “drone” or “drone” is sometimes used (from the English drone – unmanned aerial vehicle)) – an aircraft without a crew. There are many types of drones: gliders, multi-fuel and even turbojet engines.

Distinguish between unmanned aerial vehicles:

unmanned unguided vehicles;
unmanned automatic vehicles;
unmanned remote-manned aircraft (UAVs).

GROUND COMBAT ROBOTS

The exoskeleton does not replace a person, it increases the muscle effort of a person, so it is not a robot. Combat robots can move on the ground in various ways: Wheels, tracks, and even “feet”. An example of a wheeled robot is the Israeli Guardium driverless car created by G-NIUS. This vehicle is built on a four-wheelbase, so it can be used not only to protect the convoy, but also for cross-country reconnaissance.

FLOATING COMBAT ROBOTS

At the moment, there are many developments in the field of creating water combat robots. The main tasks of this type of robot are automatic patrolling, reconnaissance, protection of coastlines and ports, and mine search. the most famous hydraulic structures designed for military purposes:

“Amphibian” is an autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicle designed to work both in shallow coastal waters and at depth. The main objectives of this work are mine detection, port protection and automatic surveillance.

Gnome is a remote-controlled micro-class underwater vehicle for search and rescue operations and inspection of potentially dangerous objects without endangering people’s lives.

REMUS (short for Remote Environmental Monitoring Unit System) is a robotic submarine with a depth of 100 meters, operating for about 20 hours and controlled by 2 operators.

According to some forecasts, it can be called the weapon of tomorrow, because in the distant future a large-scale war may be unleashed for the possession of the resources of the world’s oceans.

F.A.Q

The most frequent questions that our clients ask us.

“A military robot is an automatic device that replaces a person in combat situations to save his life or to work in conditions incompatible with human capabilities,” the JFO headquarters explains.

Military operations are divided into the following types: floating, air and land.

The first drawing of a humanoid robot was made by Leonardo da Vinci, and in 1495 he presented a detailed model of a mechanical Knight capable of sitting, moving his arms and head. The project was developed on the basis of studies of the proportions of the human body.
